Mere Christianity

“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”

To me, this relates to my life, (and probably everyone's life) because it is easy to know how our lives should be, but it is not so easy to be willing to change right away. The part about wondering what God is doing in your house relates to the fact that we never really know His plan for our lives no matter how hard we try to understand it. "The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of..." symbolizes that when we allow God to work in our lives, it can completely change us to the point where our changed thoughts and actions are almost unbelievable to the people who know us.

  1. Nathan my friend, I have this feeling everyday and the answer has not gotten any clearer. I think that we will always have an idea or know the direction that God wants us to go, but we will never a hundred percent know what he wants us to do. That is why you must meditate and pray on it and ask for the best guidance God has. Some day, I have no doubt, you will be pointed in your right direction and you will do great. Just remember don't be to stubborn to go his way.

  2. I love the house image because it implies productivity, even when we're figuratively all torn up 2x4's and hanging wires. It's easy for us to understand a house has to get all torn apart if it's going to be remodeled; we know that it's ultimately leading to a more "together" final product. But it's hard sometimes to remember that when WE are the "torn up house." We simply feel messy, and question the Head Contractor's competence frankly.

But GOOD things are happening. I'm so glad to see you recognize that.

This is a little briefer than I'd like, and I do need to dock it 10% for being a little late. Still: thank you so much for sharing what you did!
